How to calculate pro-rata rent

When a tenancy starts or ends mid-month, rent is paid in proportion to the days actually stayed, not for the whole month. The formula is simple:

monthly rent × (days stayed ÷ days in the month)

Example: with €600 rent and a move-in on the 15th of a 30-day month, you stay 16 days. You pay 600 × 16 ÷ 30 = €320. Plinthos works this out automatically when you create the tenancy.

Frequently asked questions

Pro-rata rent, made clear

How is rent calculated if I move in mid-month?
You pay in proportion to the days: the monthly rent divided by the days in the month, times the days you actually stay. Move in on the 15th of a 30-day month and you stay 16 days (the 15th to the 30th, inclusive).
Is the move-in day counted?
Yes. The move-in day counts: from the 15th to the 30th of a 30-day month is 16 days, not 15.
What if I move out mid-month?
You pay from the start of the month to your move-out day, inclusive: rent × (move-out day ÷ days in the month).
Does it work for February or 31-day months?
Yes. The calculation uses the real number of days in the month you pick (28, 29, 30 or 31), so the amount is always correct.
