How to split

The amount is split equally between all flatmates.

How to split bills between flatmates

When you share a flat, splitting electricity, gas, water and internet can quickly become a source of arguments. There are a few fair methods, depending on the situation:

  • Equally — the simplest and most common method: the total divided by the number of flatmates. Best when everyone lives in the flat for the same period and the rooms are similar.
  • By room size — each share is proportional to the room’s floor area. Fairer when there is one large single room and one small one.
  • By days present — everyone pays according to the days they actually lived in the flat during the billing period. The right choice when a flatmate moved in or out mid-month.
  • Custom amounts — you assign each person the share you agree on. The calculator only checks that the shares add up to the total.

Whichever method you choose, the shares must add up to exactly the bill total. This calculator rounds each share to the cent and gives any rounding difference to the last flatmate alphabetically, so the numbers always balance.

Frequently asked questions

Splitting bills, made clear

How do you split bills between flatmates?
The most common method is splitting equally: the total divided by the number of flatmates. If the rooms are very different in size you can split by floor area, and if someone moved in or out mid-period it is fairer to split by the days each person was actually present.
How do you split a bill if a flatmate moved in mid-month?
Use the by-days method: each flatmate pays in proportion to the days they were actually present during the billing period. Someone who moved in on the 15th of a 30-day month pays half compared to someone who was there the whole month.
Can bills be split based on room size?
Yes. Splitting by floor area gives each person a share proportional to their own room. It is useful when a large single room and a small one would otherwise pay the same amount for very different space.
Can I enter custom shares instead of an automatic split?
Yes. With the "Custom" mode you assign each flatmate the amount you agree on between you. The calculator checks that the shares add up to exactly the bill total.
